Maintaining your health while socially distancing can be a challenge. A lot of us will rely on external resources to keep us healthy –gym classes, social sports, Pilates – but what can we do if we are housebound?

Here are a few tips for staying healthy and fit while staying at home:

Wake up at a reasonable time each morning.
It can be tempting to sleep in, but waking up early gives you time to exercise, have a good morning routine and can increase energy levels.

Set a goal each day
Having something to work towards can provide motivation and keep it interesting – try setting a goal like 10 000 steps a day, 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day or 10 minutes of meditation each night.

It doesn’t even have to be health related – it could be 10 minutes of tidying a day or reading for 5 minutes a night. If we have specific, measurable goals to aim for, we are more likely to have better productivity, motivation and drive.

Set yourself up for success
Set a reminder for your goals for the same time every day.
Have an area set up for exercise – have a yoga mat, a towel and whatever equipment you might need – e.g. resistance bands, dumbbells (you can substitute these for filled milk bottles/cans/textbooks.
Be accountable – tell someone close to you that you will be exercising today.
Keep it interesting – mix it up! Try yoga, Pilates, dance workouts, Tabata – whatever you’re interested in. It can be a lot of fun!

Have a daily routine
Even if you are housebound, try and stick to a routine. For example – breakfast at 7am, 30-minute workout at 8am, 10 minutes of tidying at 10am… etc.
It’s tempting to sleep in, eat whenever you like and watch movies all day but maintaining a good routine will significantly help with your mental and physical health.
