SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
Targeted treatment for persistent tendon pain and stubborn injuries.
Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate a biological response in injured tissue. It can help reduce pain, encourage healing and support your rehabilitation when persistent tendon pain hasn’t responded fully to other treatments.Shockwave Therapy is primarily used for chronic tendon problems, particularly when symptoms have persisted for several months. It has the strongest evidence for plantar fasciopathy (plantar fasciitis) and can also be helpful as part of treatment for:
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Proximal hamstring tendinopathy
- Calcific rotator cuff tendinopathy
- Gluteal tendinopathy
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
- Lateral elbow tendinopathy (tennis elbow)
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy
Treatment is generally quick, with a session taking around 10–15 minutes. During treatment, your physiotherapist uses a handheld device to deliver a series of acoustic pulses to the affected area. These waves can stimulate changes within the tendon and surrounding tissues, including:
- Encouraging tissue regeneration
- Increasing blood vessel formation and circulation
- Stimulating cell activity and protein production
- Helping to modulate pain
- Breaking down calcific deposits in certain tendon conditions
At Sandgate Physical Health Clinic, we use Shockwave Therapy as part of a comprehensive physiotherapy treatment plan—not a quick fix. Our physiotherapists will assess your condition and determine whether Shockwave Therapy is appropriate for your condition and individual goals.
