To celebrate World Pilates day today, 3rd May, we’d like to share Ann’s Story.
Ann’s Story
When Ann was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021, she faced it head-on. After losing 25 cm of her bowel during surgery and being declared cancer-free, she thought the hardest part was behind her.
But the recovery brought a new challenge – a painful hernia.
“I was managing it with painkillers for quite a while,” says Ann, a 68-year-old retired massage therapist. “But I didn’t want to rely on them forever.”
Ann decided to try a different approach – building strength from the inside out. She began Clinical Pilates at SPHC and soon added a weekly independent session to her routine.
“The difference was incredible. Slowly but surely, I became symptom and pain free. Pilates gave me my life back.”
Now, whether she’s lifting boxes while moving house, shovelling gravel for a DIY project, or hiking Mount Coot-Tha on her weekly bushwalks, Ann feels strong and steady.
“It’s improved my day-to-day life in ways I didn’t expect. I feel more confident in my body again.”

As we celebrate World Pilates Day on 3 May, Ann’s story is a powerful reminder of how Pilates isn’t just exercise – it’s a tool for healing, strength, and living well at every age.
