With a huge percentage of Australia’s population working in a seated job, it’s not hard to see why we see so many cases of neck and back pain needing treatment.

So many desk jobs require workers to spend too much time in a seated position and being inactive for this long period of time can lead to various conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression or anxiety.

Here are a few interesting, and alarming Australian statistics:

  • physical inactivity is the second highest cause of cancer in Australia, behind tobacco smoking
  • 60 per cent of Australian adults do less than the recommended 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each day
  • Almost 70 per cent of Australian adults can be classed as either sedentary or having low levels of physical activity

Here are some tips on how to stay active in your seated job:

  • Walk or ride at least part of the way to work
  • Volunteer for the coffee run
  • Have standing or walking meetings
  • Track your steps
  • Try a standing desk
  • Walk instead of calling or emailing
  • Stretch
  • Get moving at lunch time
  • Take the stairs
  • Start an office fitness challenge
  • Take breaks to move
  • Turn waiting time into moving time
