Shoulder pain is super common, especially if you’re active, and even more so if you play golf.

The shoulder’s a really mobile joint, which is great for your swing, but it also means it relies on a bunch of muscles and tendons to keep it stable. Do the same movement over and over again – like swinging a golf club – and things can start to get sore.

Common Shoulder Injuries in Golfers

For golfers, shoulder pain often comes from overuse. The most common issues we see include rotator cuff tendinopathy, bursitis, impingement, or sometimes pain referred from the neck. The lead shoulder (for right-handers, that’s the left one) tends to cop the most load in your swing, so it’s no surprise it can start playing up.

The good news? Physio can help.

Physiotherapy for Shoulder Injuries

A proper Physiotherapy assessment will pin down what’s going on and guide your rehab. Treatment usually involves some hands-on work, tweaking how much you’re doing on the course, and building strength and mobility back up with the right exercises.

Shoulder Strengthening Exercises

Here are two exercises to try to strengthen your shoulder-

1. Scapular Wall Slides

Stand with your back to a wall, feet a little out from it. Tuck your pelvis so your lower back touches the wall. Raise your arms into a “goal post” shape (elbows at 90 degrees), then slowly slide them up and back down, keeping contact with the wall. Do 2 sets of 10. Great for shoulder control and mobility.

2. Resistance Band External Rotations

Hook a band at elbow height. With your elbow tucked in, pull the band outwards by rotating your arm (not your whole body). Control it back. Do 3 sets of 10 each side. This strengthens your rotator cuff, crucial for a strong, stable shoulder.
