Whether you are getting a massage for relaxation or to recover from an acute injury, it’s important to stick to a regular treatment schedule.

Not only will this ensure you stay on top of any niggles or injuries, it will help prevent any larger issues arising!

We’ve all heard the saying ‘Prevention is better than cure’ and this is particularly important when it comes to your body – your number 1 asset!

Why do people get massages?

There are various reasons why people get massages. Generally they fall into the following four categories –

1 – Those with an Injury/pain (either Acute or Chronic)

2 – Those wanting Maintenance of an injury/pain

3 – Those looking to Prevent injury/pain

4 – Those looking for Relaxation only

  • ACUTE INJURY – An acute injury is one that has recently happened. This could range from an injury while playing sport, or a strained neck when you don’t have the correct pillow. When this occurs it is usually recommended to have a series of sessions close together to speed up recovery. This will continue until pain or swelling has reduced significantly.
  • CHRONIC INJURY – Chronic injuries occur when you have had the pain or injury for over 3 months. By continuing to treat regularly, this will help to release the injured tissues and ensure further healing. As the pain levels reduce and function returns you should then move into a maintenance program.
  • MAINTENANCE – After you experience an injury, the possibility of re-injury is quite high. Commonly known as a ‘flare up’. There are several reasons for this. You may not have completed the correct rehabilitation for the injury initially, the initial rehab may not have worked, or you are re-aggravating it. This could be through repetitive actions, poor posture, exercise or lack thereof. Generally a monthly session can help to break up the scar tissue that will have reformed after your injury, address any new injuries and work on improving posture.
  • PREVENTATIVE – This is the ideal phase of treatment. By having regular treatments, the likelihood of re-injury will be greatly reduced. During this time, your therapist can attend to any injuries that may be starting. Just like going to the dentist for a check up, a regular muscle therapy session can improve your overall health and well being immensely.
  • RELAXATION – Whether you do a lot of exercise and have constantly tight muscles, or your posture is poor from your desk job, a regular massage is a great idea. If you can manage to schedule a regular massage for yourself, you are investing in your health and looking after your mind and body!

How often should you have a Massage?

When deciding how often to have a massage we need to look at the nature of your injury (if any) and what goals you have to stay fit and healthy. We generally recommend –

REASON FREQUENCY NOTE
Acute Injury (happened recently) 1-2 per week depending on severity
Chronic Injury (over 3 months) 1 per week depending on severity
Maintenance of Injury 2 – 4 weekly to stop injury from recurring
Preventative 4 – 6 weekly to keep injuries/pain away
Relaxation only 1 monthly
